The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
