Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the right to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
